It is called the Queen of the Haute Routes, and there must be a good reason why so many people ski the Haute Route Chamonix to Zermatt every year!

The closer we get to Zermatt, the more spectacular the scenery becomes—impressive glaciers and seracs, the warmth of the huts after a day in the snow, unexpected snowfall that gives us beautiful powder to ski, the immense descent of the Stockji Glacier in front of the north face of the Matterhorn and the frozen beer waiting for us in Zermatt at the end of the tour!

These, along with a thousand other unique moments, are experiences that only a high-altitude route like the Chamonix-Zermatt can offer you.

After 20 years of experience as guides on this route, we believe that this combination of mountain huts offers the best opportunity to fully enjoy the beauty of this itinerary and its descents, with a final night at the spectacular Cabane de Bertol!

Myself and 3 friends did the Haute Route from Chamonix to Zermatt with Summitguides and Filippo as our guide. I have been with several guides over the years and Filippo was easily the best because not only is his knowledge of the mountains and therefore his ability to keep you safe second to none, but he is a great reader of people, very sociable and makes the trip incredibly memorable.

I was with Summitguides during a week of freeride skiing and heliskiing in Courmayeur, La Thuile and Valgrisenche, with Filippo as our guide. He is not only very experienced and competent as a guide. He is the warmest and kindest person, with a very good eye for the wellbeing of each person in his group. He gave me the confidence to enjoy skiing the scary slopes.

Day 1: Chamonix – Refuge d’Argentiere

Meeting at 8:30 a.m. at the Grand Montets lift station in Argentière.

We’ll take the cable car to the top of the lifts and then ski down our first slope on the Rognons Glacier, just below the famous north faces of Les Droites and Aiguille Verte. Incredible!

The morning will be spent with some runs in the Grand Montets area, allowing us to get back in shape and ensure that everyone is well-prepared (with gear and ski level) for the coming days.

In the afternoon, after reaching the flat part of the glacier, we’ll put on our skins for the first climb to the Argentière Hut.

This first day will help us acclimatize gradually—a great way to avoid burning out our legs for the rest of the Haute Route Chamonix-Zermatt! The afternoon at the hut will be simply stunning, surrounded by one of the most impressive areas of the Mont Blanc massif!

Day 2: Refuge d’Argentiere – Champex

After a short descent of the glacier, we’ll put on our skins and start our climb to the Col du Chardonnet (or to the Col du Passon, depending on conditions; the guide will choose the best and safest route). After a short but impressive abseil (don’t worry, your guide will assist you with everything), we’ll reach the Saleina Glacier on the Swiss side.

Another short descent follows, then the second climb of the day—a brief but steep ascent to the Fenêtre de Saleina, where we’ll enjoy an amazing view of the flat Trient Glacier, which we will ski down for a short stretch.

The last, very short (80 m) and steep climb will take us to the Col des Écandies. From here, a fantastic 1.400m descent of the Val d’Arpette (north-facing, often with great powder) will lead us to a well-deserved beer in Champex. A hot shower is promised!

Day 3: Champex – Cabane de Prafleuri

A gentle start this morning after yesterday’s long climb. A taxi transfer to Verbier will take us to the lifts that bring us up to the Col des Gentianes. From here, we’ll ski a short section on-piste before skinning up to the first col of the day: Col de la Chaux.

We’ll then ski down the other side and climb up again, first to the Col de Momin and then to the summit of the Rosablanche. From here, we’ll have a fantastic view of the Dent Blanche, and we’ll start to see the Matterhorn for the first time…getting closer!

A beautiful ski descent will take us to the Cabane de Prafleuri, a very warm hut, where the welcoming tea is waiting for us (don’t worry… there’s plenty of beer too!).

Day 4: Cabane de Prafleuri – Cabane des Dix

From the hut, a short climb will take us to the Col des Roux, where we’ll have a view of the Grand Dixence, an impressive artificial lake.

After a long traverse high above the lake, trying not to lose altitude, we’ll reach the famous and steep Pas des Chèvres. From here, we’ll begin another climb and, in a couple of hours, reach the beautiful Cabane des Dix, which offers an impressive view of the north face of Mont Blanc de Cheilon.

If the weather and conditions allow, it will be possible to climb to the summit of La Luette, not far from the hut, for some good afternoon skiing.

Day 5: Cab.des Dix – Cab.des Vignettes

A gorgeous day!

Today, we will climb the Pigne d’Arolla (3,796 m), the highest peak of our tour. From the summit, we’ll enjoy amazing views of all the 4,000-meter peaks of the Wallis. Mont Blanc, the starting point of our incredible journey, will now appear far in the distance…

A beautiful descent will lead us to the Cabane des Vignettes, a stunny location!

Day 6: Cabane des Vignettes – Cabane de Bertol

After a short descent, we’ll put on our skins and begin the climb to reach the Col de l’Eveque (3,392 m). From here, we’ll cross the border twice within a few meters!

After a beautiful descent on the Arolla Glacier, we’ll put on our skins (and sometimes crampons) again for a steep traverse, before hiking up to one of the most impressive huts in the Alps, the Bertol Hut. We’ll have to leave our skis at the col and climb the impressive (but easy) ladders to reach the hut.

You can be sure that tonight’s dinner will come with one of the most stunning views you’ll ever experience!

  • Climbing the infamous ladders

  • The view from the hut

Day 7: Cabane de Bertol – Zermatt

The royal day!

The descent of the Bertol ladders will wake us up properly before we put the skins back on and start our ascent to the Tête Blanche (3,707 m), the second-highest point of our tour. From here, the view is simply magnificent, with the Matterhorn, Dent d’Hérens, and Dent Blanche within reach.

From the Tête Blanche, we will begin our endless descent to Zermatt, crossing the majestic Stockji Glacier, passing through impressive seracs and crevasses, before passing right under the north face of the Matterhorn and reaching the piste-area of Zermatt, where we will stop for a well-deserved beer!

The descent continues uneventfully on the slopes until we reach the village of Zermatt. Return to Chamonix by minibus.
