The Summer Haute Route Chamonix  to Zermatt is a glacier trek accessible to many. Perhaps less famous than its ski touring version, but no less beautiful or interesting.

The alternation between glaciers and bucolic trails surrounded by greenery, the unexpected August snowfall at night, the descent of the vast Stockji glacier in front of the north face of the Matterhorn, and the cold beer waiting for us at the Schonbiel Hut facing the west face of the Matterhorn.

These and a thousand other moments are unique experiences that only a high-altitude traverse like the Haute Route Chamonix-Zermatt can offer.

Day 1: Tour – Refuge Albert 1er

Meeting point with your Guid in Les Tour, in the Chamonix Valley, at the lift station. Gear review and then you’ll take the lifts up to Col de Balme, then a 2-hour hike to the Albert 1er Hut.

In the afternoon, we’ll review crampon techniques on the glacier, which will be useful in the following days.

Day 2: Refuge Albert 1er – Cabane d’Orny

Early departure. After a short stretch on the moraine, we reach the Tour Glacier. Here, we will rope up and put on crampons to cross the glacier.

Passing by the Col Supérieur du Tour, we will cross into Switzerland, emerging onto the Trient Glacier.

We’ll then descend to the Cabane de Orny, situated on a beautiful rocky balcony.

Day 3: Cabane d’Orny – Cabane Chanrion

Descent from the Cabane d’Orny to Champex (using the chairlift for the final stretch).

Taxi transfer to the Mauvoisin Dam. From there, it’s about a 3-hour hike to the Cabane Chanrion along a beautiful trail through green meadows, at the foot of the Grand Combin.

Day 4: Cabane Chanrion – Cabane de Vignettes

Today starts with a short descent!

After about 2 hours of walking, we’ll reach the final part of the Otemma Glacier, once one of the longest in the Alps (and we’ll definitely notice it!).

A final climb leads us to the Cabane des Vignettes, a true eagle’s nest, perched at the edge of the glacier.

Day 5: Cab.de Vignettes – Cabane de Bertol

Today is a fairly long stage.

We will cross the glacier to reach the Col de l’Évêque, briefly re-entering Italy.

After leaving the glacier and descending towards Arolla, we will arrive at the beautiful Plans de Bertol, where we will rest before ascending to the Cabane de Bertol, the most spectacular hut on the Haute Route, accessed via some very exposed (but easy) ladders.

Breathtaking views of Dent Blanche and the Matterhorn.

Day 6: Cabane de Bertol – Schönbielhütte

The most spectacular stage.

After reaching the glacier again (using the famous ladders), we will ascend to Tête Blanche (around 3,700 m), the highest point of the trek, offering a stunning balcony view of the Matterhorn and all the 4,000-meter peaks surrounding Zermatt and Saas Fee.

We’ll descend on the crevassed Stockji Glacier and then ascend to the Schonbiel Hut, located right in front of the west face of the Matterhorn.

Enjoying a beer on the terrace of the Schonbielhütte, facing the Matterhorn, will be one of the most beautiful moments of the Haute Route Chamonix to Zermatt.

Day 7: Schönbielhütte – Zermatt

Today we return to the valley.

We’ll descend to Zermatt in about 4 hours via a beautiful trail that runs along the north face of the Matterhorn and Monte Rosa, passing through typical Walser villages.

Return to Chamonix by minibus.
